The airport is the most convenient place to pick up a rental car for many visitors to Brisbane, but not everybody. That’s why we have branched out from our titular mission of “Airport Rentals” and made available a range of pick up locations across the city and suburbs. These are the places you can start your self-drive holiday in the sunny city of Brisbane.
Ascot
To the northeast of the city centre is Ascot, a well-established suburb with some lovely large old homes. It is also known for its horse racing history, and is home to the Eagle Farm and Doomben Racecourses. Ascot is also not far from Brisbane Airport, making it a convenient place to pick up your car rental if you’d rather stay away from the busy terminals. Thrifty Australia has a depot here.
Boondall
To the north of Brisbane Airport is Boondall, home to the Brisbane Entertainment Centre and bordered to the east by the Boondall Wetlands. It is a great place to get a head start on a road trip heading north, with the M1 passing straight through. There are plenty of options for car rental in Boondall - Avis, Hertz, Budget and Apollo all have depots there.
Brendale
30 minutes drive north of Brisbane is Brendale, a northerly suburb accessible via the Strathpine railway station. Here you can pick up a car to start your Queensland adventure, with a rental by Europcar, Keddy or Thrifty.
Burpengary
Far to the north of Brisbane, past Redcliffe and North Lakes, is Burpengary. Once a large truckstop, it is now a fast-growing suburb with the M1 running through the middle. You can pick up a rental car at the Thrifty depot here.
Caboolture
Another northern outpost of Brisbane, Caboolture is a bit of an urban satellite although still officially part of the greater Brisbane area. It is the last stop on the Brisbane commuter railway service. Hertz has a depot in Caboolture.
Capalaba
To the southeast of central Brisbane is Capalaba, a big suburb with malls and commercial centres which lies alongside the Tingalpa Reservoir. Ferries to Stradbroke Island leave from nearby Cleveland. Avis and Budget both have depots in Capalaba.
City/Downtown
Downtown Brisbane is where much of the action happens, and this includes car rental! If you are arriving to the Brisbane Central train station or spending some time in the walkable CBD before taking to the roads, you might want to book a city pickup with one of the many companies offering depots here, including Ace, Apollo, Hertz and Budget.
Coopers Plains
This residential neighbourhood is to the south of central Brisbane, a central spot to access the southern suburbs and home to some nice green areas including Beryl Roberts Park. Here you can pick up a Europcar car rental.
Coorparoo
Still quite central but just south of the hustle and bustle of downtown Brisbane is Coorparoo, with several heritage-listed sites including the old fire station and Queen Alexandra Home. Alpha and Thrifty both have depots here.
Darra
Follow the M5 inland and across the Brisbane River and you will come across Darra, a diverse suburb in the southwest which is handily located at the junction of the M5 and M7 motorways. Pick up an Avis car rental at their Darra depot.
Fortitude Valley
“The Valley” is a central suburb on the north bank of the Brisbane River, elegant and edgy at the same time and filled with boutiques and bars. Rental companies with depots here include Europcar, East Coast, Thrifty, Alpha, Avis and Jucy.
Hamilton
Between brisbane Airport and the city centre lies Hamilton, an upmarket suburb where you will find the Portside Wharf complex and cruise terminals. The hilly area offers some lovely views over the river and the CBD. Budget has a rental depot here.
Hendra
One of the closest suburbs to the airport is Hendra, a bustling suburb which borders the Eagle Farm and Doomben Racecourses. It’s a great place to pick up an Ace rental if you’d rather do it away from the busy terminals.
Ipswich
Far to the southwest of central Brisbane is Ipswich, a peripheral suburb and city in its own right which began life as a mining settlement. Picking up a rental car here is a great start to a road trip in the Mighty Outback - you will find depots for Hertz, Thrifty, Budget, Avis and Europcar rentals.
Kenmore
Follow the Brisbane River inland and you’ll eventually come across Kenmore, a western riverside suburb with rolling hills and a lot of green spaces. It’s a great and laid-back place to pick up your rental car, which you can do at the Kenmore Europcar depot.
Moorooka
South of Brisbane central between the railway line and Toohey Forest Conservation Park is Moorooka, with both residential and commercial areas. Here you can pick up an Alpha car hire at their depot.
Morayfield
To the north of Brisbane and inland from Deception Bay is Morayfield, a suburb and town with a large semi-rural area, a great relaxed place to begin your Queensland journey - you can reach it on the commuter train from downtown. Pick up a Thrifty Australia rental here.
Redcliffe
Located seaside on the scenic Redcliffe Peninsula around 40 minutes north of the city, this suburb makes an excellent day trip from Brisbane. It is home to nice beaches, the Settlement Cove Lagoon, Redcliffe Museum, botanic gardens and a an excellent foreshore area. Europcar has a Redcliffe depot.
Rocklea
This southwestern suburb gives good access to the Ipswich Motorway heading inland. Rocklea also hosts the Brisbane Markets which are famous for flowers and fresh produce. There are Hertz, Thrifty and Budget depots there where you can start your rental adventure.
Spring Hill
If you’re spending time in central Brisbane, nearby Spring Hill might be a good place to pick up your rental. The suburb is located just north of the CBD, and is one of Brisbane’s oldest residential neighbourhoods. You’ll find a Europcar depot here.
Strathpine
North of Brisbane is Strathpine, named for the Pine River which winds along the edge of the suburb. The Strathpine Centre mall is a favourite for shoppers in the area, and you can collect a rental car at the Strathpine Avis depot.
Tingalpa
Between central Brisbane and the coast is Tingalpa, a mixture of older homes and new estates with many green spaces. Here you can find the Brisbane Polo Grounds, and a Europcar depot.
Brisbane International Airport
This is a very convenient place to pick up a rental car for many visitors to Brisbane, giving you wheels as soon as you hit the ground so you can explore. You’ll find a huge range of major and local rental suppliers have counters in the terminals, with more offering off-airport depots and free shuttles to get you there.
Brisbane Domestic Airport
Brisbane Domestic Airport is another major entry point for travellers, and also has a wide range of rental suppliers of all kinds, with off-airport locations offering shuttles to pick up passengers.
Wellcamp Airport
Two hours west of Brisbane past Toowoomba is the Wellcamp AIrport, sometimes used as an alternative airport for travellers to Brisbane or those heading elsewhere in Queensland. Europcar, Budget and Avis all have depots here.
